In short, I loved this. Made more enjoyable by the fact I didn’t think I would. Always a pleasant surprise. Described somewhere as a mix of rock, punk and rockabilly, I wouldn’t disagree too much although less of the latter and more of the punk and rock for me please. There is definitely an American influence blended into this throughout.
The songs are short and snappy, certainly of the foot tapping variety and despite having a drum sound that I never really enjoy – too dominant and lacking diversity at times – it does suit the songs on here. And the overall contrast between tracks, embellished by vocals which hold a lot of attention, is enough to counter this [personal] issue. I really like songs which drive relentlessly, even to the point of repetition, and this gives you exactly that in bucket loads. Contrast ‘Bikini Red’, a great title track, with ‘Big Brother muscle’. Marvellous.
Whilst none of the three members of the band went on to have huge commercial success anywhere, Bill Carter, the vocalist seems to have drifted away from the music scene altogether. I wonder where he is? Another case of a band who didn’t reach their potential. Listening 30+ years later they left a solid legacy in this offering. Well worth checking out….I loved it (I’ve said that already…time to go).
