I grew up with The Kinks. Not that they were on my radar. I was a kid from up North. Working class family (although we did have that in common). They were much, much cooler. Muswell Hill, North London, art school, psychedelic 60’s, Carnaby Street. A million miles from me. But, for many they were the centre spindle of the 60’s. With a fairly unique sound, an enigmatic front man (fortunately sensible enough to survive), and hit singles they, for a while, were massive.
It's a mono recording, probably more evident via ‘Dedicated Follower of fashion’, than on any other track, there is more on offer on here than a smattering of their ‘greatest hits’. It’s a great LP from an era that produced a lot of really good stuff, but also a fair amount of stuff that really should never have seen daylight. But this shines through in every way possible. You will not be disappointed.
And what I really like about second hand music is the lifeline. Of course, it’s impossible to track but each LP has a story of it’s own. It’s just a shame that those diaries are unobtainable because the scenes, the events, the occasions and the memories and stories are as much part of the experience as the LP itself. I really do wonder where Pauline Hartland is nowadays. I hope you are safe.
