Shusha Assar (later Guppy) was born in Tehran in 1935 and was the daughter of Grand Ayottollah Mohammed Kazem Assar (a Professor of Philosophy and renowned theologian). She was educated in Paris at the Sorbonne in the early 50’s and was as beautiful as intelligent and vivacious and soon became part of the circle of such greats as Sartre, Camus and Louis Aragon. When she married Nicholas Guppy, she moved to London and was soon fluent in English as well as Persian and French. This album shows the influences of all 3 languages, cultures and music. Her version of Jacques Brel’s ‘The Devil’ shows her moving seamlessly from English to French. Her traditional Persian song ‘Barun-baruneh’ is haunting and beautiful. The whole album is full of great songs, which she interprets with her wonderful sense of melody and her lilting vocals (there is a definite hint of Paris in these). Highly recommended album.
