It wasn’t long before this LP blew me away. I love songs which allow you to go to a place you’ve never encountered. It adds so much to the listening experience. And when it’s backed by such a soulful, delightful, simple acoustic sound that is Pretoria, well, the listening experience can’t get much better.
But the warmth of this LP starts before Track 3. From the opening chords, it makes you want to sit up and listen, in a laid back, comfy sofa sort of way. More of a Sunday afternoon offering than one for Saturday night, unless of course you frequent folk clubs; this demands attention. To get the most from each track, this is a sit down and listen to type of LP. Do not make dinner or play with the kids. Take some time out and by giving it your time, it will give you back in bucket-loads.
Recorded live, although you wouldn’t know it as it’s consistency and quality of sound is up there at studio levels, the first side concludes with a gentle singalong on ‘Old fashioned Saturday night’, and it’s just beautiful, enough to bring tears to your eyes. Why isn’t life as simple and gentle as this track. It is just stunning.
Any folk lover out there, especially if you aren’t familiar with Mike’s work will not be disappointed if you added this to your collection. But it transcends the boundaries of folk. Anyone who has an appreciation for solid compositions, classy acoustic play and songs which demand an ear, should add this to their collection. I’ve reviewed several LP’s on this site, and if I had a choice, this would be the one I would hold as a keep sake.
