A campaigner of various degrees, this was the first LP believed to be completely given over to environmental issues and the challenges our beautiful planet faces. And so it is disheartening that more than 50 years later the warnings are still not being heeded.
There is a haunting, eerie feel to some of these tracks. It reminds me a little of how the lands in America previously owned by the Native Americans back in the 1800’s were given up to ‘progress and the white man’. There is a sadness in the soul when listening to some of these tracks, none more so ‘Pretty Saro’. But in contrast the following track, ’70 miles’ just tells it like it is ‘it’s a garbage dump’ as the lyrics like to tell you.
No subject matter is off limits here. The music is simple in its execution but heartfelt. The guy was a prolific songwriter and recorder and one thing you do not lack here is value for money. 18 tracks in all and it is one to sit back on, drop your eye lids and try and imagine why we, as a race, have been so impotent in dealing with a problem that is of our own making and one that will ultimately destroy us all. Sad times.
