BRIEF SUMMARY
Well you don’t see LP covers such as this anymore. If I am honest I didn’t hold out much hope for this as I carefully placed it on to the turntable for the first time. But it was a cold, blowy filthy wet day, so what did I have to lose? According to the cover when this was released they were on the verge of invading Europe after a successful time in the homeland. Did I blink? To be honest I can’t quite recall the impact they made over here in the UK. However…..
…..this is a well put together LP. It showcases a mid 60’s band at their best. A hint of California; vocals and harmonies that work extremely well and beautifully constructed material that grabs your attention from the moment the guitar explodes into life on Him or Me.
They had some tough competition to deal with back in 1967 when this was released, and perhaps that was their undoing. But listening to this again, it definitely holds its own. It isn’t Sgt. Peppers nor Pet Sounds, but as an insight into a hard working American band of the time there are some special moments worth checking out..take a pop on Make it with Me on Side 2. Fantastic.
