Throw together a mix of Irish singing, a confusing entry in the European Song contest representing Luxembourg (it was not this ‘Geraldine’, albeit someone else), songs taken from some of the biggest artists of the time (Joni, Elton and Lightfoot), and what do you come up with? Exactly this LP. There is no doubting her vocal abilities, it doesn’t get a much better airing than ‘Columba to Derry’ in showcasing the melody and range. Which makes you wonder why she didn’t go on to bigger and better things? There were many solo female artists around at the time from both sides of the Atlantic and with her Irish roots it can only have helped her exposure. (After all her manager had just split from managing Dana). It didn’t happen, this LP was a result of a short lived career so it is well worth savouring for that reason alone.
Dominant is her vocal; and the songs, whilst short and sharp at times, unless you are very familiar with the above mentioned artists (and others), aren’t especially well known. But she gives them grace and honesty and if you appreciate a simple vocal style, broad in range and tone, well you should love this offering. You can’t help but feel there were some wrong decisions taken along the way but she wouldn’t have been the first.
