Probably one of those voices you can instantly recognise. I know nothing about pitch but to be able to deliver with a fairly deep voice, especially as a woman, is a gift. Add to that the small quaver she has within, shown up no better than on ‘Friends’ then you have quite an offering. You can easily understand why she would appeal to a wide audience.
One of the few people to transition successfully from theatre to stage, she first came to prominence in the cast of ‘Hair’ a fairly radical stage performance in the 60’s/70’s. A true global star of the music world that is no mean feat from an era where even getting a recording contract was something else.
There are some lovely tracks on here, not least of which is ‘All the way from America’ which I could listen to all day long. And the other bonus on this LP is that the musicianship on this LP is exactly what you would want. It is stunning. But maybe with the like of Clarence Clemons, Chris Spedding and Danny Federici, amongst others, you wouldn’t expect anything else.
